I'm linking up with Mix and Match Mama for the first Workin' It Wednesday of the year - New Year's Goals! I love the idea of a goal versus a resolution. I feel like I can constantly work toward a goal, whereas a resolution feels too high-pressure (like one slip up and it's a fail). But goals just seem so positive :) So, my first goal:
#1: Take better care of my body
If you're a Mama of a young one, you know this to be true: the days are long but the years are short. Some nights I'm too tired from the day's events to even floss my teeth, yet all of a sudden I have found myself entering my mid thirties! So, knowing that I'm a better wife and mom when I'm well rested, happy and in good health, I'm making this my goal for the year. I feel like there are choices to be made every single day, and if I can just put my health first I'll be working toward my goal. Using my eye cream instead of it going untouched in the drawer, going to bed earlier, opting for the stairs over the elevator, flossing, eating more veggies...

All positive things that just need that little nudge to complete, that reminder to take care of my body. I've been consistent with Pure Barre and/or Pilates a couple times a week, which I know does all sorts of good both physically and mentally.
And while I can count on one hand the number of mani/pedis I've had since Parker was born, I thought going to a nail salon was totally in keeping with my New Year's goal so I took a morning last week and got a manicure/pedicure while Sweet P was at school. Heavenly! Also, I finally made an appointment for a spa massage with a gift certificate I've had for a year and a half. Talk about not putting my body first! And I'm pretty sure red wine does all sorts of fabulous things for your health, so cheers to Happy Hour ;)

#2 Take better care of my belongings
My second goal was inspired by Marie Kondo's books about keeping a tidy house. I've always strived for "a place for everything and everything in its place" but MK goes further to say that part of keeping tidy is putting all the items back correctly after use. I feel like the main message I'm talking away is to really treat my belongings better. I was especially inspired by her thoughts on kitchen counters - she asserts that counters are workspace and should be kept bare. This way, after cooking, it's much easier to wipe everything down to clean and take care of the space. Her method of purging things that don't spark joy (and only keeping what you love) also naturally makes you look at your belongings more closely, and kind of organically starts that yearning to treat what you do keep with care. There is seriously even a section in the second book just on how to fold undergarments. I don't think I'll ever be quite up to Marie Kondo level, but if I make it my goal, I can only get closer!
Who else out there has goals or resolutions?
Lol, right before I gave birth I folded all of my undergarments the way she describes. It really made a space difference, but with a newborn, ain't no one got time for that!😊 I am focusing on self care this year too. It is so important!
ReplyDeleteYes!! It's the whole "put your oxygen mask on first, then help others" thing ;)
DeleteI love these! I am starting pilates reformer tonight actually and I am excited, have you tried that or do you do regular mat pilates?
ReplyDeleteI do a new thing - a group class on reformers set to music :) It's awesome! But I've done mat in the past and liked it as well :) Is your reformer class a private one?
DeleteI wish we had a Pure Barre nearby, but up here by Fort Drum, there's literally nothing! Also, I just bought Spark Joy, and I can't wait to apply some of Marie Kondo's principles to our home!
ReplyDeleteYou will love the book!! If you are donating, fill up old Amazon boxes and they will collect them and send to Goodwill complimentary :) Also, I think PB has online classes! Though I need the accountability of going in person, ha!
DeleteI love these goals! I read her other book last year and it inspired me to purge our entire house. It felt amazing! I want to do another round this year!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see the progress you make! Here's to a new year.
